9/22/2022 Adult Beg. Kicking Set, Short 1, Long 1 clarification, Grip of the Serpent, 5 Swords

Today’s class we review Short Form 1, Kicking Set 1, Long Form 1 (discuss what the form is teaching us and how to move through ‘addressing the darkness’ angle transitions.

With a Belt test coming the floor was open to questions from students on screen. We worked through further visualization of Grip of the Serpent in the gaping of the face and checking their height zone by anchoring their head back.

A question has been raised about the rebounding location for the outward chop after the lifting heal palm strike at the end of Five Swords. The question is where does the rebound happen along the left rib cage. In lessons and classes I have taught you to rebound of your upper part of your left rib cage, in the LW video GM Speakman shows rebounding off the lower left rib cage.

In short, both are correct.

To quote your written journal, “The preceding right hand sword to the neck flashes through and rebounds off your left upper rib cage and taking advantage of the left lifting heel palm execute a right outward hand sword strike to the front of the trachea.

The difference between your upper and lower rib cage is time-travel for the rebound position back to your target and ease of which you can change the angle of your motion.

The lower rib cage is certainly easier and more comfortable flow of motion. However, the “time travel” distance is longer. As you learn compounding motion and work your efficient timing to maximize your strikes, you will find by simply adjusting your rebounding location will tighten up your timing. For instance, play with rebounding in this same motion from you sternum rather than from the left side of your center line and notice how your timing changes.
